REMEMBERING THE TRANSATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE
Overview
The slave trade helped to make Glasgow rich. How the city has grown and developed is, even today, partially due to the wealth created out of slavery. Street names such as Virginia Street and Jamacia Street remind us of Glasgow’s past trading connections.
Glasgow Artist Beth Forde curated an exhibition of work made by Secondary school pupils in Glasgow which expressed their reactions and views of the horrors of transatlantic slavery. This exhibition was part of a larger awareness campaign highlighting the 200th anniversary of the abolition of Britain’s involvement with the trade.
